Surf City Soroptimists of Huntington Beach invite you to join them in empowering women and girls through access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment and to help stamp our human trafficking in all forms in southern California by making a donation to our club on #givingtuesday.
Our success stories are countless….Take Waukecha, single mother of 3, who graduated from college, has a meaningful career, sits on the board of another nonprofit and lives in her own home or Laneisha, single mother of 3, survivor of human trafficking, domestic abuse and homelessness, who not only received a $2000 Live Your Dream Award from our club and a $5000 award from our region but also became one of 3 women who received a federation award of$10000 – life-changing, to say the least. Laneisha’s dream: to become an attorney and work on public policy that affects former foster youth when they age out of the system – an experience that Laneisha knows first-hand. And our club, gives more awards than any other club in our region of 36 clubs. We give 14 awards for a total of $21,000.
Our collaboration with other clubs and like-minded organizations is boundless. We partner with Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor Area and Soroptimist International of Brea/LaHabra on Dream It, Be It Programs, a mentoring program targeted to teenage girls who face obstacles to success. This program covers everything from creating “dream boards” to overcoming obstacles, setting goals, balancing stress and more. We are active participants in a multi-regional committee to help end human trafficking in southern California through education and advocacy. And, we work with agencies like Waymakers and The Salvation Army to support survivors of human trafficking.
Our partnership with the Assistance League of Huntington Beach allows us to host a Day of Empowerment for 25 women which includes a continental breakfast, a $100 shopping spree in the Assistance League Thrift Store, hair & make up services, a workshop, lunch (provided by Jersey Mike’s), sharing, a “swag bag” and free childcare services.
We adopt 4 women (at least 2 of whom were former Live Your Dream Awardees) for our year to assist with unexpected expenses and to make every holiday and special occasion joyous.
We give 3 scholarships to single moms who are attending one of the 3 community colleges in our area: Golden West, Orange Coast & Coastline.
We support Waymaker’s Huntington Beach Youth Shelter by buying a “snowflake” at holiday time and more….
